Forum Strategy #TrustLeaders Roundtable: Recruitment & Retention Report

On Monday 4 November, Forum Strategy held the second of three Autumn #TrustLeaders Roundtable events, chaired by the former Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Baroness Estelle Morris and Forum Strategy’s CEO, Alice Gregson. Our Autumn roundtables focus on three key priority areas – accountability reform, recruitment and retention, and curriculum – and bring a number of our members together to seek to understand what underlies many of the key issues, to present potential ideas and solutions relating to the topic areas, and to signpost – where possible – to existing best and impactful practice already taking place across the system.

This second roundtable focused on recruitment and retention and was attended by a group of members from across our three national trust leaders networks (for CEOs, COOs and Education Executives). The discussion during the roundtable event focused on the following fundamental questions:

• Further to the national challenges, are there further key challenges and barriers to recruitment and retention in our system that we have not yet captured or explored?
• Are recent announcements and proposals from the government and Ofsted enough to mitigate the challenges sufficiently? What more could they do to help the sector?
• What examples of excellence and high-quality practice can trust leaders share that have had a real impact on ensuring better staff retention and/or better recruitment?
• What have we learnt from other sectors that can be tried and tested in our sector? What trends and developments have we not fully appreciated yet that could impact recruitment and retention in future?
